IMO Class 3 Chapter 2: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division Detailed Overview

Arithmetic is the fundamental branch of mathematics that derives from the Greek word arithmos, which means “number.” The numbers are being studied, and operations such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication are being performed.

Operations with numbers

Addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication are all arithmetic operations.

Addition (+)

The other fundamental operation in Arithmetic is addition. It refers to combining two or more values to form a single term. For e.g., 1+3 = 4.

The identity element of addition is 0, which means that adding 0 to any value yields the same result. The inverse of any value is the opposite element of addition, which implies that keeping the opposite of any digit to the digit itself gives the additive identity.

 Subtraction (−)

Subtraction is a basic arithmetic operation that involves finding the difference between two numbers. It is a mathematical operation that is used to determine how much is left when one quantity is taken away from another quantity.

In other words, subtraction is the process of finding the result of taking one number away from another. The result of subtraction is called the difference. It is denoted by the symbol “-” (minus).

Multiplication  (×)

Multiplication, like addition and subtraction, connects two values into a single value, or the product. The multiplicand and multiplier are the two distinct values. The product of a and b is represented as ab or a x b.

Division  (÷)

The inverse of multiplication is division. It computes the quotient of two numbers, the dividend divided by the divisor. If the dividend is greater than the divisor for any well-defined positive number, the quotient is greater than one.

How to Get Ready for a Math Olympiad

  1. Understand the format: Before you begin preparing for a Math Olympiad, it is important to understand the format of the competition, the types of problems that are typically presented, and the scoring system. This will help you prepare more effectively and develop the skills needed to perform well.
  2. Master the basics: To do well in a Math Olympiad, you need to have a strong foundation in basic mathematical concepts and skills. Practice solving problems that cover these topics to strengthen your understanding.
  3. Solve practice problems: Solving practice problems is one of the most effective ways to prepare for a Math Olympiad. Look for past Olympiad problems and practice solving them, focusing on understanding the solution approach and applying it to similar problems.

Overall, preparing for a Math Olympiad requires dedication, practice, and a strong understanding of mathematical concepts and techniques. Follow these steps to maximize your chances of success in the competition.
