Example 1: Nine parrots are perched on a tree. How many parrots are still on the tree if five fly off?

Number of parrots on a tree = 9

Number of parrots fly away = 5

So, the number of parrots left on the tree is 9 – 5 = 4

Example 2: A bus is carrying twelve people. How many people are still in the bus if two people got out?

Number of people on a bus = 12

Number of people get down = 2

So, the number of people remaining on the bus 12 – 2 = 10
