Chapter 1: Tracing Changes through a Thousand Years – Class 7 Notes

As time passes, the meanings of words evolve. For instance, the term “Hindustan,” which refers to the modern-day nation-state of India, had a different connotation in the past. Historically, the term was first used in the 13th century by Minhaj-i-Siraj, a Persian chronicler, to refer to the areas of Punjab, Haryana, and the lands between the Ganga and Yamuna that were part of the Delhi Sultan’s dominions.

However, the areas included in this term changed with the extent of the Sultanate, and it never encompassed South India. In the early 16th century, Babur used Hindustan to describe the geography, fauna, and culture of the inhabitants of the subcontinent, as did the 14th-century poet Amir Khusrau with the word “Hind.”

While the idea of a geographical and cultural entity like “India” did exist, the term “Hindustan” did not carry the political and national meanings associated with it today.

Chapter 2: New Kings and Kingdoms – Class 7 Notes

During the 7th century, different regions of the subcontinent were comprised of prominent landlords and warrior chiefs, who were recognized as subordinates or samantas by the existing kings.

These samantas had to provide gifts for their kings and overlords, attend their courts, and offer military support. However, as they gained power and wealth, they declared themselves as maha-samanta, maha-mandaleshvara (the great lord of a “circle” or region), and sometimes even asserted their independence from their overlords.

Chapter 3: The Delhi Sultans – Class 7 Notes

Delhi’s transformation into a capital that controlled vast areas of the subcontinent began with the foundation of the Delhi Sultanate at the beginning of the 13th century. Under the Tomaras and Chauhans, Delhi became an important commercial center, with many wealthy Jaina merchants residing in the city and constructing several temples.

Coins called dehliwal were minted in Delhi and had a wide circulation. The Delhi Sultans built numerous cities in the area that we now know as Delhi

Chapter 4: The Mughal Empire – Class 7 Notes

The Indian subcontinent’s vastness and diversity of people and cultures made ruling it an arduous task in the Middle Ages. However, the Mughals created an empire and achieved what their predecessors could not, controlling almost all of the subcontinent by the 17th century. Their structures of administration and governance left a lasting political legacy that future rulers could not ignore.

Chapter 5: Rulers and Buildings – Class 7 Notes

The Qutb Minar, constructed between 1199 and 1229, is a five-storey tower with inscriptions in Arabic under its first balcony. Over the years, it was damaged by lightning and earthquakes and repaired by various rulers, including Alauddin Khalji, Muhammad Tughluq, Firuz Shah Tughluq, and Ibrahim Lodi.

Chapter 6: Towns, Traders, and Craftspersons – Class 7 Notes

What a traveller might find in a medieval town depended on the type of town they visited – a temple town, administrative center, commercial town, or port town.

Many towns served multiple functions, such as being both an administrative center and a temple town, as well as a hub for commercial activities and craft production. Students can find further details about Towns, Traders, and Craftspersons in Chapter 6 of CBSE Class 7 History.

Chapter 7: Tribes, Nomads, and Settled Communities

In ancient times, different societies evolved differently, leading to variations in social change. While some regions already followed the varna system prescribed by the Brahmanas, leading to an increase in social and economic inequality, there were other societies with different structures.

This chapter delves into the ways in which tribes, nomads, and settled communities evolved and interacted in the subcontinent, influencing each other’s culture and way of life.

Chapter 8: Devotional Paths to the Divine

This chapter explores the various paths people take to express their love and devotion to God. Through rituals, singing, or silent contemplation, individuals connect with the divine, influenced by the Bhakti and Sufi movements that have evolved over centuries. These devotional practices have left a lasting legacy on Indian culture and spirituality.

Chapter 9: The Making of Regional Cultures

This chapter delves into the complex processes that have contributed to the development of regional cultures in India. From language and cuisine to art and music, each region has its unique identity that has evolved over time through intermixing of local traditions with external influences.

While some traditions are specific to particular regions, others are similar across regions, and some derive from older practices in a specific area but take a new form in other regions. Understanding the making of regional cultures provides insights into the diversity and richness of Indian society.

Chapter 10: Eighteenth Century Political Formations – Class – 7 Notes

The eighteenth century was a time of great political change in the Indian subcontinent. The death of Aurangzeb in 1707 marked the beginning of a new era, and the third battle of Panipat in 1761 was a significant event in the region’s history.

During this time, new political groups emerged, which played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of the subcontinent. For CBSE Class 7 students, it is essential to understand the significance of these developments and their impact on Indian history.
