Chapter 1 – The Earth in the Solar System – Class 6 Notes
The Earth is the third planet from the sun and the only known planet to have life-sustaining features such as an atmosphere containing free oxygen and oceans of water on its surface. In our solar system, the Earth is the fifth largest planet. It shares space with the Sun, eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, comets, and meteoroids.
Chapter 2 – Globe: Latitudes and Longitudes – Class 6 Notes
A globe is a three-dimensional model of the Earth that is used for various purposes, similar to maps. There are two types of globes: terrestrial globe, which models the Earth, and celestial globe, which models the celestial sphere.
Latitude is a measure of location on a globe or map relative to the Equator and is calculated from an imaginary north-south line known as the Prime Meridian. Longitude, on the other hand, is a measure of location east or west of the prime meridian at Greenwich. The range of latitude values is from 0° at the Equator to 90° at the poles.

The Earth has two types of motions – Rotation and Revolution. Rotation is the Earth’s movement around its own axis, causing day and night. Revolution is the Earth’s movement around the Sun, which takes one year to complete.

Maps are graphic representations of a particular area, showing physical features, political boundaries, and other information like topography, population, climate, natural resources, and economic activities. The Earth’s surface is divided into four major domains – the Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere and Biosphere. The Lithosphere is the solid part of the Earth that includes the crust and the uppermost mantle.
The Hydrosphere consists of all water bodies on Earth, including oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and groundwater. The Atmosphere is a layer of gases that surrounds the Earth and protects it from harmful radiation. The Biosphere includes all living organisms on Earth.

Landforms are natural features of the Earth’s surface, such as Mountains, Plateaus, and Plains. Mountains are formed by the movement of tectonic plates or volcanic activity and can be classified into different types based on their mode of transformation: Fold Mountains, Block Mountains, and Volcanic Mountains. A plateau is an elevated area with a relatively flat top, while a plain is a low-lying, gently sloping land surface with minimal relief.
