CBSE Class 11 Chemistry Practical Syllabus with Marking Scheme

Practical work is an essential aspect of studying Chemistry as it helps students to understand the theoretical concepts by performing experiments in the laboratory. Hence, it is imperative that students familiarize themselves with the CBSE Syllabus for Chemistry Practical and the list of experiments included in it. The practical exams carry a weightage of 30 marks, making it essential for students to score well in them to improve their overall score.

Micro-chemical methods are available for several of the practical experiments. Wherever possible such techniques should be used:

The experiments included in the syllabus are as follows:

A. Basic Laboratory Techniques

  1. Cutting glass tubes and glass rods
  2. Bending a glass tube
  3. Drawing out a glass jet
  4. Boring a cork

B. Characterization and Purification of Chemical Substances

  1. Determination of the melting point of an organic compound
  2. Determination of the boiling point of an organic compound
  3. Crystallization of impure samples of Alum, Copper Sulphate, or Benzoic Acid

C. Quantitative Estimation i. Using a mechanical balance/electronic balance ii. Preparation of standard solution of Oxalic acid iii. Determination of the strength of a given solution of Sodium hydroxide by titrating it against standard solution of Oxalic acid iv. Preparation of standard solution of Sodium carbonate v. Determination of the strength of a given solution of hydrochloric acid by titrating it against standard Sodium Carbonate solution

D. Qualitative Analysis a) Determination of one cation and one anion in a given salt Cations‐ Pb2+, Cu2+, As3+, Al3+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Mg2+, NH4 + Anions – (CO3)2‐ , S2‐, NO2‐ , SO32‐, SO2‐ , NO ‐ , Cl‐ , Br‐, I‐, PO43‐ , C2O2‐, CH3COO‐ (Note: insoluble salts are excluded)

b) Detection of nitrogen, sulphur, and chlorine in organic compounds

c) PROJECTS Scientific investigations involving laboratory testing and collecting information from other sources.

By performing these experiments, students will develop their practical skills and deepen their understanding of the theoretical concepts.


Suggestions:

These are some investigatory projects that can be pursued, each requiring approximately 10 periods of work, unless otherwise indicated:

  1. Examining the presence of bacterial contamination in drinking water by testing for sulphide ions
  2. Investigating different methods of water purification
  3. Analyzing the hardness and presence of certain ions such as Iron, Fluoride, Chloride, etc. in regional variations of drinking water and identifying the causes for any excessive levels
  4. Investigating the foaming properties of different washing soaps and the impact of adding Sodium carbonate to them
  5. Determining the acidity levels of various types of tea leaves
  6. Measuring the rate of evaporation of different liquids
  7. Assessing the impact of acids and bases on the tensile strength of different fibers
  8. Studying the acidity of fruit and vegetable juices.

Please note that any other investigatory project requiring approximately 10 periods of work can be pursued with the teacher’s approval.
